Is your practice ready? The time to act is NOW. Providers only need to show 90 days of meaningful use in 2011 to qualify for the first stimulus payment. Starting in 2012, providers will need to show a full year of use. Providers who get in early can qualify for as much as $44,000 in total incentive payments, but incentive funds are only available for a limited time. The longer you wait, the less money you get. Implementing an EMR can have other financial benefits as well. One practice in Kalamazoo, Michigan, was able to cut staffing costs by $91,000 in their first year. That's a real, immediate cost savings above and beyond the stimulus package. |

Starting in May 2011, physicians can each receive an $18,000 incentive if they have an electronic health records system instituted that includes ePrescribing capability and connectivity to other providers. This amount gradually reduces for the next 5 years to a total amount of $44,000. The incentive program is scheduled to end in 2016.
